ALBI, France — University of South Carolina rising senior Rougui Sow earned the women’s long jump title at the 2018 French Elite Championships over the weekend, while fellow rising senior Yann Randrianasolo took fifth place in the men’s long jump.
Sow’s journey to a national title began Friday, as she easily topped her qualifying group with a jump of 6.19m (20-3 ¾). The Le Havre, France, native came back Saturday night for the championship round and took the lead right away with a jump of 6.38m (20-11 ¼) on her first attempt. She never relinquished the lead, putting the competition away with her fourth attempt, which measured in at 6.49m (21-3 ½).
Randrianasolo also won his qualifying group, though it took until his final jump, which measured in at 7.65m (25-1 ¼) before he was assured of a trip to the final. In the championship round on Sunday evening, the Toulouse, France, native’s best attempt was his first, and he finished fifth overall with a mark of 7.78m (25-6 ¼).
Both Sow and Randrianasolo now turn their attention to the 2018 European Championships, to be held August 7-12 in Berlin, Germany. Sow is the second-ranked jumper from France during the qualification period with a mark of 6.72m (22-0 ¾), set last season at the Spec Towns Invitational. That’s the 15th-best mark on the overall European qualification list.
Randrianasolo, meanwhile, is ranked third among French internationals and 26th on the overall European leaderboard with his effort of 8.01m (26-3 ½) set June 23 at the Albi National Music Jump Meeting.
