No. 24 Gamecocks T-3rd Heading Into Final Round in Maui
Will Miles (T-12th, -6) matched a career-low with a 66 (-5) in R2 Saturday
LAHAINA, Hawaii – No. 24 South Carolina is T-3rd at the 2018 Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic after shooting a 279 (-5) in the second round on Saturday. Senior Will Miles paced the Gamecocks, matching a career-best with a 66 (-5). He climbed 35 spots on the leaderboard and sits T-12th at 6-under for the tournament.
“We played pretty well as a team today and Will Miles played outstanding,” said head coach Bill McDonald. “He didn’t look that great warming up on the range, but he somehow found a way. It was a good bit tougher out there today with the wind, but our guys have put us in a good position to make a run tomorrow.”
Miles, a Hilton Head Island, S.C. native, led the team with six birdies. He had just one bogey the entire round. Miles shot 35 (-2) on the front and carded a bogey free 31 (-3) on the back. He shot 66 twice at last year’s tournament en route to a career 54-hole low of 204 (-9), which earned him fourth place.
Fellow senior Scott Stevens is T-6th at 8-under overall and two shots off the lead. He posted a 1-under 70 with three birdies. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native had a bogey to start the day but then went 3-under over his next 15 holes with a trio of red numbers. Stevens, who was the runner-up medalist at least season’s tournament, is seeking is third career top-10 finish at the Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic.
Freshman Ryan Hall continued his steady play with a 1-under 70 a day after shooting a career-best 68 (-3). The Knoxville, Tenn., native is T-20th at 4-under overall heading into Sunday’s final round. He’s seeking his third top-20 finish of the fall season in four stroke play starts.
Sophomore Andrew Spiegler was the final counting score with a 73 (+2). The Abingdon, Va., native was 4-over through five holes but righted the ship shooting 2-under over his final 13 with three birdies and one bogey. Senior Ryan Stachler shot 74 (+3). He had a solid round but was hurt by a triple bogey on the par-4 18th.
Carolina will need to makeup nine shots and some on Sunday for a chance. No. 25 Cal is in the driver’s seat at 27-under (541) for the tournament thanks to a 9-under 275 on Saturday. North Florida posted the round of the day with a 266 (-18). They jumped up the leaderboard from ninth and currently sit in second place (544, -24).
Final round action gets underway Sunday at 2 p.m. ET with a shotgun start. The Gamecocks quest for some hardware will start on holes one through three.
