Horvit and Gamarra Martins Advance to Doubles Semifinals at Oracle ITA National Fall Championships
SURPRISE, Ariz. – South Carolina’s Mia Horvit and Ingrid Gamarra Martins advanced to the main draw doubles semifinals after earning their third-consecutive win on Friday at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex.
No. 20-ranked Horvit and Gamarra Martins edged by No. 29 Elysia Bolton and Jada Hart of UCLA, 7-6 (4), in the first set. After going up, 1-0, in the second set, the Bruins claimed five-straight games, taking a, 5-1, lead. The Gamecocks ultimately dropped their second set, 6-2, forcing an overall tiebreaker. Carolina controlled the tiebreaker, coming out on top, 7-6 (4), 2-6, 10-6.
No. 45-ranked Gamarra Martins and Chiara Tomasetti went back-and-forth in their first set, being within one game of each other throughout. Gamarra Martins took a, 5-4, lead before Tomasetti came back and tied at 5-5. The senior aced her serve, claiming the 11th game and taking a, 6-5, lead. Feeding off of her momentum, Gamarra Martins worked her way to a, 7-5, first-set win.
In a second set that was almost identical to the first, Gamarra Martins claimed three-consecutive games, surging to a, 4-3, lead. Finding herself up, 5-4, once again, Gamarra Martins got the job done, winning the match, 7-5, 6-4.
Playing her second singles match of the day, Gamarra Martins downed Emily Smith of Vanderbilt in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, never falling behind in either.
Competing in doubles consolation, Megan Davies and Rachel Rohrabacher faced the No. 4-ranked team in the nation in Syracuse’s Gabriela Knutson and Miranda Ramirez. Playing a close first set, the Gamecocks outlasted Knutson and Ramirez, 7-6 (5). The two traded games again in the second set, this time with the Orange coming out on top, 7-5, and forcing a tiebreaker.
Davies and Rohrabacher went up, 5-0, early in the breaker before Knutson and Ramirez made a run, bring the score to 7-5, Carolina. The Gamecocks kept fighting, ultimately defeating the No. 4-ranked duo, 7-6 (5), 5-7, 10-6.
Next, Horvit and Gamarra Martins face Clemson’s No. 16-ranked Marie Leduc and Fernanda Navarro. In singles consolation, Gamarra Martins takes the court opposite of No. 24 Emily Arbuthnott of Stanford at 12 p.m. ET. Davies and Rohrabacher will compete against Tulsa’s Vera Ploner and Martina Okalova in doubles consolation.
