Gamecocks Begin Fall Season at ANNIKA Intercollegiate

Columbia, S.C. – The South Carolina women’s golf team is set to participate on the ANNIKA Intercollegiate in Lake Elmo, Minn., at the Royal Golf Club. The tournament will be played across three days, starting on Mon., Sept. 17, and ending on Wed., Sept. 19.

“We are really excited to begin our season at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate. It will be a very deep and competitive field to start the year,” South Carolina head coach Kalen Anderson said. “It will prove to be a good test to see where we stand early in the year.”

The 54-hole stroke play event features 12 of the top Division I women’s programs in the country. In addition, a gala reception takes place before the event, during which Annika Sörenstam presents the ANNIKA Award Presented by 3M to the nation’s best female college golfer.

The event now boasts nine of the top-10 teams in the most recent Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. In the field are Alabama (1), Arkansas (2 and 2017 ANNIKA Intercollegiate champion), UCLA (3), Duke (4), Southern Cal (5 and 2015 and 2016 ANNIKA Intercollegiate champion), Stanford (6), Texas (7), South Carolina (9 and 2014 ANNIKA Intercollegiate champion), Northwestern (10), Arizona (12), Oklahoma State (17) and Minnesota (host school)

The Gamecocks won the tournament back in 2014 and have taken sixth place each of the past two seasons against the routinely tough competition.

Returner Lois Kaye Go was the top finisher for the Gamecocks in 2017. She finished even par to place 14th. Anita Uwadia finished tied for 18th, while Ana Pelaez and Marion Veysseyre finished 30th and 39th, respectively.

Last season, South Carolina finished its season at the NCAA Regional in San Francisco. Four Gamecocks return from last season’s lineup, including Go, who is coming off a gold medal performance at the 2018 Asian Games.

Head Coach Kalen Anderson enters her 12th season with the program. She has helped South Carolina appear in eight of the last nine NCAA Championships and has led the Gamecocks to five NCAA Regional titles since 2010.

South Carolina next competes at the Windy City Invitational in Chicago, Ill. That two-day tournament will be played Oct. 1-2.
