Gamecocks to Host Two-Day S.C. College Invite; Senior Day Saturday

South Carolina will host Wingate, UNC-Wilmington and Queens University in a two-day meet beginning on Friday at 4 p.m., at the Carolina Natatorium/Blatt PE Center.

COLUMBIA, S.C.— South Carolina men’s and women’s swimming and diving will host its final home meet of the season as it welcomes Wingate, UNC-Wilmington and Queens University into the Carolina Natatorium/Blatt PE Center for a two-day quad-meet.  Events will start on Friday at 4 p.m., with the Gamecocks senior day recognition at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday as a preamble to the second day of competition.

The Gamecocks enter the weekend coming off of a split against Georgia Tech in which the women exploded in a 193-107 win while the men fell, 153-147 last Saturday in Atlanta.  Carolina’s men trailed by just three points against the 20th-ranked Yellow Jackets heading into the 400 free relay, the final event of the dual-meet.

This will mark the eighth-consecutive year that South Carolina has hosted the quad-meet format, sweeping the previous seven to close out each respective home schedule.

As the season winds closer to the championships stages and qualification for the NCAA Championships and CSCAA Invite, Carolina swimmers and divers have tallied 17 top-50 times. Each of the Gamecocks’ seven divers have already qualified for the NCAA Zone B Championships.

QUOTEABLE: HEAD COACH MCGEE MOODY

“We are excited to honor our seniors this weekend in our last dual meet of the season.  It will be our last chance to go through our race prep routines and race strategies. These teams bring great competition to Columbia for our last meet before the championship season begins.”

QUOTEABLE: HEAD DIVING COACH TODD SHERRITT

“We’re looking forward to our invite this weekend. Coming off a great week at Georgia Tech, we hope to carry that momentum into this week. Conference championships are just around the corner so we’re going to use this meet to make some final tweaks in our dives. Hopefully, we’ll come away with some records tomorrow and Saturday. The Team is looking good and I’m really  happy where everyone is at right now.”

GAMECOCK NOTABLES:
– Freshman diver Anton Down-Jenkins continued his dominance as remained undefeated in dual meets with a 369.30 on the 1-meter board and a 416.55 on the 3-meter last weekend at Georgia Tech.
– Emma Barksdale won both the 100 breast (1:02.11) and the 200 IM (2:01.19) while also contributing to a pair of relay wins for the Gameocks at Georgia Tech.
