Hall Breaks 400m Record for Second-Straight Week as Gamecocks Compete at Clemson

Randrianasolo, Jonathas strengthen NCAA hopes Friday night

CLEMSON, S.C. — It was another record-setting day for University of South Carolina track & field junior Quincy Hall as the Gamecocks competed on the opening day of the Tiger Paw Invitational. Hall set Carolina’s school record in the indoor 400m for the second-straight week, running 45.72 Friday night at the Clemson Indoor Track & Field Facility.

Hall’s new record comes one week after the junior ran 45.84 at the Carolina Challenge to reset the school’s indoor 400m record in his first individual race as a Gamecock. His time is the fourth-fastest mark on the planet this season. Senior long jumper Yann Randrianasolo and junior 400m runner Wadeline Jonathas also took steps to solidify their NCAA Indoor Championships outlook on Friday as the race to be in the national top-16 intensifies.

Hall entered the week tied for the top spot in the NCAA in the men’s 400m, and he got out quickly in the fifth heat of the Invitational flight on Friday night. The Kansas City, Mo., native dominated the competition on every stride, and his time of 45.72 was .14 seconds faster than last week’s Gamecock indoor record. He finished third overall on Friday, behind Houston’s Obi Igbokwe (45.35) and Texas A&M’s Devin Dixon (45.68), both of whom ran in the second heat. Those are the fastest three times in the NCAA this season and three of the four fastest times in the world.

Randrianasolo took the men’s long jump lead on his fourth attempt, setting a new season best with a mark of 7.78m (25-6 ¼). He was matched in the sixth and final round by Houston’s Trumaine Jefferson, who was also measured at 7.78m, and the two now share the No. 15 spot on the NCAA leaderboard.

The Gamecocks were once again strong in the women’s 400m, including two podium finishes in the Invitational section. Jonathas ran a new indoor personal best, moving up to No. 8 on the NCAA chart with a time of 52.86. That was the second-best time of the evening, behind Penn State’s Alexis Holmes (52.58). Aliyah Abrams, who entered the week ranked third in the nation, ran 52.91 to grab bronze on Friday.

The day started with a bang, as Milan Parks laid down a blazing-fast time in the preliminary round of the women’s 60m hurdles. Parks set a new personal best of 8.24, which ranks sixth in Carolina history and boosted the senior up to 18th on the 2019 NCAA leaderboard. Her time was the fastest by a Gamecock in the event in seven years. She went on to run 8.29 in the semifinals and finish 10th overall.

Parks wasn’t the only Gamecock to have success on the 60m straight track. Makyla Stanley ran two personal records in the 60m dash, posting times of 7.43 in prelims and 7.41 in the semifinals. The second run moved the senior up to 41st on the NCAA list.

Eric Favors continued his strong run of form Friday in the men’s shot put. The redshirt junior, who entered the week ranked 13th in the nation, threw 18.58m (60-11 ½) for a fourth-place result.

2017 All-American Isaiah Moore was in action for the first time in the year 2019, and he ran an excellent race in the semifinals of the men’s 60m hurdles, posting a new season best of 7.82. That mark ranks 18th in the NCAA this year. Moore finished seventh overall, running 8.07 in the final.

FROM THE COACH

“Quincy ran really fast, and I’d love to see what he could have done in the fastest heat. He’s not happy about finishing third, but that’s a good thing, because he’s motivated to match the two guys who beat him when they cross paths in the postseason. Yann also had a good day and raised his season best. He’s working on some technique issues, but he battled his way into the final and did well when he got there.”

“Milan’s race was incredible. That was a huge personal best, and it puts her in range of getting an NCAA qualifying mark the next time she runs. Makyla gave great effort today. She almost made the final, but I’m impressed with how she continues to drop time. Wadeline also ran a personal best and I think she has a really, really good shot to make NCAA’s in her first season at the Division I level.”

“I was encouraged to see Isaiah run two races. His first time was very promising, and I’m excited to see him run again next week as he continues to gain fitness. Eric also got off another good throw and continues to show great improvement. Ty Jaye Robbins and Noah Walker also ran really well today, the best runs of their careers, and they should be commended for that. Overall, we feel great about how we performed today against the best field in the country, and we’re excited to get better tomorrow. – Head Coach Curtis Frye
