BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Three Gamecocks punched their tickets to national finals on Friday as the University of South Carolina competed on the first day of the 2019 NCAA Indoor Championships. Isaiah Moore, Aliyah Abrams and Quincy Hall advanced out of prelims at the Birmingham CrossPlex to give themselves a shot at glory on Saturday.
Moore, Abrams and Hall were three of the six Gamecocks in action on Friday. Carolina did not record a team score on the opening day of the meet, though 24 of the 34 events will be scored Saturday.
Moore made it through to the men’s 60m hurdles final by the slimmest of margins. His prelim time of 7.784 was just .003 seconds ahead of Youngstown State senior Chad Zallow’s time 7.787 for the eighth and final qualifying spot. Moore, a 2017 first-team All-American outdoors, will run in his first-career NCAA indoor final tomorrow at 4:40 p.m. CT.
Abrams ran a terrific first lap in her women’s 400m preliminary heat, and that carried her through to the second day. Her time of 53.09 ranked seventh on Friday, and she’ll compete in an individual NCAA final for the first time Saturday at 4:50 p.m. CT. Abrams is the first Gamecock to make the NCAA final in the indoor 400m since Natasha Hastings, who won the title in 2008.
Hall hasn’t lost a 400m race since his sophomore year of high school, and that streak continued Friday as he dominated the second preliminary heat with a time of 46.67. That time was the fifth-best of the evening on Friday. Tomorrow, the 2019 SEC champion in the event goes for a national championship at 5 p.m. CT. He’s the first Gamecock to qualify for the men’s 400m championship since Jonathan Fortenberry in 2003.
Two Gamecocks earned second-team All-America finishes on Friday night in the 400. Nine-time NCAA Division III national champion Wadeline Jonathas finished 11th on the women’s side with a time of 53.22 to earn her first-career All-America honor at the Division I level. Senior Arinze Chance placed 12th in the men’s 400. He avoided a crash in front of him and clocked a time of 47.54.
Yann Randrianasolo competed on Friday night in the men’s long jump. The senior ended his indoor season as an honorable mention All-American.
FROM THE COACH
“Isaiah is a competitor. I said the biggest mistake they could make is to let Isaiah in the meet, because I knew if he got here, he’d give it a shot. I thought he could finish third in his heat, and he got a close fourth, but he hit the time that got him into the final. We thrilled to death for him. It gives him a chance to be a first-team All-American and score for the Gamecocks.”
“Everything is falling our way. Aliyah made it in, which we expected. She had a bad conference meet, but we knew she’d beat some people she’s been beating all year. She lined up No. 11, but she’s one of the top-five kids in the country, so her making the final was expected.”
“Quincy will be in the second section. He’ll be going against the two guys with the fastest times in the country. We’ll take Quincy. He’s got a good shot. As long as he’s in the meet, we’ve got a shot to win.”- Head Coach Curtis Frye
