Gamecocks Post 18 Wins at Buccaneer Invitational

Charleston natives lead the way as Carolina dominates CSU meet

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Saturday was filled with trophies for the University of South Carolina track & field team, as the Gamecocks earned 18 event victories at the Buccaneer Invitational. Curtis Frye’s team dominated the meet, setting a tone for the long and grueling outdoor season ahead.

Jordan Fields (women’s high jump), Carisma Holland (women’s discus and shot put), Wadeline Jonathas (women’s 200m), Kelsey Larkin (women’s 1500m), Rivaldo Leacock (men’s 400m hurdles), Morgan Lee (women’s 5000m), Milan Parks (women’s 100m hurdles), Malik Paul (men’s discus), Ty Jaye Robbins (men’s 400m), Bryce Simpson (men’s pole vault), Makyla Stanley (women’s long jump and 100m), Hailey Sweatman (women’s pole vault) and Noah Walker (men’s 110m hurdles) won individual titles on Saturday. Carolina also won the men’s 4x100m relay and both 4x400m relays.

Stanley grabbed her first victory of the outdoor season in the women’s long jump, hitting 18-11 ¼ on her fifth attempt. It’s the Charleston native’s second long jump win overall this year, including her indoor victory at the Dr. Sander Invitational in New York City.

One day after tossing a new personal best in the hammer, Paul took home his first victory as a Gamecock in the discus. The junior’s top effort of 48.83m (160-2) took the title, and freshman Isaiah Davenport came in second at 47.02m (154-3).

Simpson came away with his first win of the season in the men’s pole vault. The senior was able to clear 4.65m (15-3) on Saturday for the victory.

Carolina’s first track win came in the men’s 4x100m relay. Evan Miller, Darrell Singleton Jr., Jeremiah Talbert and Carlos Wilson snagged their first triumph of the outdoor campaign with a time of 40.45.

Two weeks after running the anchor leg on Carolina’s All-America indoor 4x400m relay squad, Robbins was on the track individually in the men’s 400m. The senior gave his outdoor season a boost with a big victory, running 48.01 to win by nearly two seconds.

An All-American in the 4x100m relay each of the last two seasons, Parks is aiming to qualify for the NCAA Championships in the 100m hurdles in her last collegiate season, and her first outdoor race of 2019 was a good one. The senior won the 100mH with a finals time of 13.60, the 14th-best effort in the nation this season.

One week after winning the men’s 400m hurdles in Orlando, Walker was victorious in the 110m hurdles on Saturday. Though the time was not wind-legal, the junior set a personal best with a mark of 14.43.

Leacock was an NCAA Regional qualifier as a freshman in 2018, and his quest to make it back to the postseason began with a 400m hurdles victory on Saturday. His time of 53.26 was more than six seconds ahead of the field in a dominating effort.

Carolina’s NCAA-winning 4x400m quartet raced the 200m on Saturday, and the Gamecocks controlled the race from start-to-finish. Jonathas won with a time of 23.20, the eighth-best mark in Carolina history, and Aliyah Abrams was second at 23.33, the 10th-best time on the Gamecock records list. Those times rank fourth and sixth, respectively, on the 2019 NCAA list. Stephanie Davis (23.51), Amecia Pennamon (24.05) and Tatyana Mills (24.20) rounded out the top five in a Carolina sweep.

Lee earned her first collegiate victory with an outstanding effort in the women’s 5000m. The Charleston native’s time of 17:55.18 cut nearly a minute off of her previous personal best. Sarah-Sims McGrath’s mark of 18:12.93 was good for second place.

Fields set a new outdoor personal best on Saturday, clearing 1.75m (5-8 ¾) to move up to sixth on the Carolina records chart and 10th in the NCAA this season. Freshman Dymier Jeffery came in second; her effort of 1.70m (5-7) is 10th-best in Carolina history.

Sweatman supercharged her outdoor season with a women’s pole vault win in her hometown. The junior cleared 3.95m (12-11 ½) on Saturday, which is 17th-best in the nation this season.

Holland’s performance very nearly put the redshirt freshman on Carolina’s all-time top-10 list in the women’s discus. The Seneca, S.C., native’s top throw was 47.08m (154-5), just three centimeters shy of the No. 10 spot in Carolina history.

A few hours after winning the discus, Holland added a second title, this time in shot put. Her top throw was 15.19m (49-10), which ranks 18th nationally this season.

Larkin was scheduled to run the steeplechase, then was rebooked for the 1500m after her original race was canceled. The junior responded with a winning effort, beating the field by more than four seconds with her time of 4:54.04.

The day ended with the 4x400m relays, and Carolina started the closing stretch with a victory in the women’s race. Fields, Jeffery, Mathilde Coquillaud-Salomon and Jhari Williams posted a time of 3:44.93.

South Carolina capped the day with a men’s mile relay win. Quincy Hall, Jordan Sessom, Talbert and Walker broke the tape in 3:11.37.

FROM THE COACH

“This was a great meet for our team. We’ve got a lot of questions we need to answer, especially on relays, and we figured some things out today. Our women’s quarter-milers ran the 200 today, and they accomplished what they set out to do. They got the spark they needed to run good times next week in Gainesville. This was a tight track, and we still performed well. We’ve got a ton of kids on our team from Charleston, and it was great to see them perform well in front of their friends, family and high school coaches. This is a beautiful city, and this was a great experience. I expect us to build on this week and go run some great times at Florida. We’re healthy and in great shape.”- Head Coach Curtis Frye

UP NEXT FOR THE GAMECOCKS

South Carolina competes at the Florida Relays next week as the outdoor season shifts into high gear. The three-day meet, featuring one of the best fields in the nation, runs March 28-30 in Gainesville, Fla.
