Gamecocks Finish Opening Round of Evans Derby Experience

OPELIKA, Ala. – No. 9 South Carolina women’s golf completed the opening round of the 2019 Evans Derby Experience in a tie for ninth, carding a 296 (+8) as a team at Saugahatchee Country Club.

“The team did a good job of sticking to our game plan today,” South Carolina head coach Kalen Anderson said. “The hole locations were extremely difficult, and we were forced to play conservatively most holes.  On the accessible hole locations, we unfortunately converted few birdies. We need to continue to stay patient on this golf course and good things will happen the next couple of days. Lots of golf left on a challenging golf course.”

No. 8 Arkansas holds the overall team lead, finishing with a team score of 285 (-3). The top five is rounded out by No. 7 Florida (288, E), No. 2 Texas (290, +2), No. 13 Auburn (290, +2) and No. 14 Kent State (292, +5).

Senior Marion Veysseyre was Carolina’s top performer in the first round. She carded two birdies and recorded no bogeys on the back nine. In her opening four holes, Veysseyre sank three pars and a birdie, but back-to-back bogeys pushed her back on the front nine. She made the turn with a 1-over 37, and got back to even with a birdie on the par-5 15th and ended day one with an even 72.

Both Lois Kaye Go and Emily Price each finished the round in a tie for 30th. For Go, she used two birdies on her path to her 74 while Price sank one birdie during her first round of the weekend.

Rounding out the Gamecocks starting five was Ana Pelaez and Anita Uwadia. Pelaez’s round began with a 37 (+1) on the front nine. Three-straight bogeys on the back nine created some adversity for the junior, but a birdie on the par-5 15th got her back on track to finish with a 4-over 76. Uwadia scattered 13 pars on her way to her 5-over 77 in the first round.

Gaby Amos competed as an individual for the Gamecocks, and finished with a 8-over 80.

The Gamecocks will get back on the course tomorrow morning for the second round and will wrap up the tournament on Monday.
