Gamecocks Move Up to No. 3 in ITA Poll; Martins at No. 5

TEMPE, Ariz. – The South Carolina women’s tennis team continues to make history in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Rankings, coming in at No. 3 as a team and senior Ingrid Martins sitting at No. 5 in the singles poll.

The No. 3 rankings bests Carolina’s high, set just last week at No. 4, by one spot. Carolina earned the ranking after blanking two ranked programs on the road in No. 12 Texas A&M and No. 23 LSU.

Martins moved up two spots from No. 7, breaking her own record, again, after defeating two top-10 players and the No. 50 individual. Against Vanderbilt, Martins topped No. 6 Fernanda Contreras in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. Facing No. 50 Katya Townsend of Texas A&M, Martins won her match, 6-0, 6-2. Most recently against LSU’s No. 10-ranked Eden Richardson, Martins took an easy win, 6-2, 6-1. Martins holds a dual-match record of 10-2 and is 22-6 overall.

In doubles, Martins and partner junior Mia Horvit sit at No. 2 in the poll after going 2-1, with one match going unfinished, in the past two weeks. Together the duo has tallied a 10-2 mark in duals and have an overall record of 20-4.

Moving up in singles, senior Paige Cline is now the No. 27-ranked individual. Cline’s jump comes after she downed Vanderbilt’s No. 13 Christina Rosca in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6 (4). She also went toe-to-toe with the No. 106 and No. 60 individuals before play was suspended due to the match being clinched. Cline is 7-3 in duals for the Gamecocks and 16-6 overall.

Also moving higher in the rankings, Horvit comes in at No. 96 this week. In the past four matches, Horvit won two and had two go unfinished. At the No. 3 position, Horvit has tallied a 10-2 mark in dual matches and owns a record of 17-5 on the season.

Representing the Gamecocks in the doubles poll as well, senior Rachel Rohrabacher and sophomore Megan Davies are at No. 29 on the list.

In the team rankings, Carolina is joined by 11 other SEC schools. Overall, 18 of the Gamecocks’ 21 opponents this season appear in the ITA’s top-50.
