Gamecocks, Wilson Finish Strong at Isleworth

Team posted low final round while Wilson shot 66 (-6) to surge up leaderboard

WINDERMERE, Fla. – South Carolina posted the low score of the day, shooting 281 (-7) in the final round of the 2019 Tavistock Collegiate Invitational. Senior Jamie Wilson paced the Gamecocks with a 66 (-6) that featured five birdies and an eagle.

“It was another gutsy final round performance by our guys and a really special round for Jamie,” said head coach Bill McDonald. “We just need to figure out how to bring our final round mojo to the party a little earlier next time. This team fights until the end and I’m proud of them having the low round of the day. Hopefully it’s something we can build on going forward.”

Carolina took 10th as a team in a stacked field to finish just seven shots back of cracking the top-five. After two frustrating rounds to start the tournament, the Gamecocks bounced back and were one of just four teams to shoot under par today. Coming into the event this week, ten teams were ranked in the top-50 of the initial Golfstat Team Rankings for the fall.

Wilson surged up the leaderboard 28 spots in the final round to finish T-14th at 2-under (214) for the tournament, marking his third top-20 in four fall starts this season. The Mount Pleasant, S.C., native, is tied for the team lead with seven rounds of par or better. Wilson had just one blemish on his scorecard today, a bogey at the par-4 first hole. Carolina began the final round on the back nine where Wilson was lights out. He made the turn bogey free at 5-under thanks to a five-hole stretch that featured three birdies and an eagle.

Fellow senior Caleb Proveaux also made a nice move, climbing 21 spots on the final leaderboard thanks to a 2-under 70 in round three. He had five birdies Monday and was only hurt by a bogey and a double right after making the turn. The Lexington, S.C., native, finished T-33rd at 4-over for the tournament.

Junior Jack Parrott fired an even par 72 in the final round for a career-best, T-26th finish at 3-over. He was steady all week, but just needed a few more red numbers on his scorecard. Freshman Jack Wall was the final counting score with a 73 (+1) that featured five birdies.

Sophomore Ryan Hall, fresh off his first collegiate win, T-38th at 5-over. He made the turn at 1-under today, but had a tough final nine holes with three bogeys and no birdies en route to a 74 (+2).

Unranked UCF ran away with the team title, winning by 14 shots over LSU. The Knights shot 844 (-20), including a lights out 275 (-13) in the second round. Only four teams posted a 54-hole team score of par or better this week at Isleworth Golf & Country Club. UCF’s Johnny Travale took home medalist honors by a shot, shooting 205 (-11). He carded a final round 66 (-6) today.
