Three Doubles Teams in Round of 16
WINTSON-SALEM, N.C. – South Carolina women’s tennis picked up six doubles wins on day one of competition at the ITA Carolina Region Championships hosted by Wake Forest at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.
Starting out in the Round of 64, Ana Luiza Cruz and Gabriela Martinez Asensi topped Jordyn King and Jacy Smith from Western Carolina, 8-4. Also with an 8-4 victory, Silvia Chinellato and Emma Shelton defeated UNC Charlotte’s Margaux Maquet and Rocio Safont. Wrapping up the first round, Elise Mills and Kendall Couch outlasted Miljana Ristic and Mayumi Saguchi of Gardner-Webb, 8-3.
Playing the Round of 32 right after, Chinellato and Shelton kept their momentum going, upsetting N.C. State’s No. 3-seeded Jaeda Daniel and Adriana Reami, 8-6. Getting their first win of the day after a first-round bye, No. 5 Megan Davies and Mia Horvit finished business quickly, 8-1, against Lilie Steryous and Jenna Vroman of Wofford. Cruz and Asensi also took a commanding win, defeating Marta Gonzalez-ballbe and Lana Mavor from N.C. State, 8-2.
In the round of 32, Mills and Couch fell to North Carolina’s No. 9-seeded Kacie Harvey and Sophia Patel, 8-4.
No. 8-seeded Kennedy Wicker retired from her match in the first round of qualifying singles against Patel. Patel advanced to the next round, 4-6, 6-2, 4-1.
Up next, the doubles Round of 16 begins at 9:00 a.m. on Friday. Round of 64 and Round of 32 singles will also be played with Horvit seeded at No. 5 and Davies and No. 9. B Draw will also be in action on Friday.
