Gamecocks Advance to Singles and Doubles Semifinals

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – South Carolina women’s tennis picked up a pair of Quarterfinals wins from the doubles team of Silvia Chinellato and Emma Shelton and Megan Davies in singles, advancing the Gamecocks to the Semifinals of the ITA Carolina Region Championships on Saturday at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.
 
Kicking off the day with doubles, Chinellato and Shelton upset North Carolina’s No. 9-seeded Alle Sanford and Anika Yarlagadda, 8-5. Carolina’s duo faces Furman’s Julia Adams and Madison Dillon, who upset the No. 9 and No. 2 teams in the field, at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
 
No. 9-seeded and No. 125-ranked Davies played a long day of tennis with both of her matches going to three sets. Davies’ first victory came against Liz Norman of N.C. State, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3. Next, Davies upended the Wolfpack’s No. 5-seeded and No. 40-ranked Alana Smith, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (11). Davies is scheduled to see No. 1-seeded and No. 5-ranked Kelly Chen of Duke at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
 
Winning her Round of 16 match, No. 5-seeded and No. 49-ranked Mia Horvit defeated UNC Charlotte’s Maquet Margaux, 7-6 (0), 6-3. She then fell to North Carolina’s No. 2-seeded and No. 12-ranked Cameron Morra, 7-5, 6-0.
 
In doubles, No. 5-seeded Davies and Horvit were not able to top N.C. State’s No. 1-seeded and ranked duo of Smith and Anna Rogers, falling, 8-5, in the Quarterfinals.
