Carolina in Fourth After First Round of Spring Season

NEW ORLEANS, La. – No. 16 South Carolina women’s golf shot a 6-over 294 in its first round of the spring at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship. The Gamecocks sit in fourth place with freshman Emily Price in a tie for seventh, and three shots off the leader, after the opening round at English Turn Golf and Country Club.

“Overall a good start today, South Carolina head coach Kalen Anderson said. “Conditions were very windy, and scoring was difficult. The team battled all day, and finished strong on exceptionally touch closing holes. I am pleased with our patience and fight today.”

Carolina ended the opening day as the top SEC school between the four schools participating in New Orleans. The Gamecocks sit in front of three teams higher in the Golfstat team rankings, including No. 8 Florida, who finished the day one stroke behind the Gamecocks.

Price put together a two birdie and one bogey performance in her opening 18 holes. The freshman made the turn at 1-under (35) and was bogey free and 2-under through 16 holes, and sitting in the top five. The Ludlow, England native bogeyed the par-3 17th and finished in a tie for seventh.

Junior Lois Kaye Go began her day with a torrid pace. She sat 3-under through seven holes and made the turn at 2-under (34) and was in a tie for first. Although Go finished the day with a team-high five birdies, a tough back nine resulted in a 2-over (38) that saw her round finish with an even and tied for 13th.

Ana Pelaez managed to put in one birdie throughout her round, and played a solid afternoon of golf by finishing with 13 pars, including eight on the back nine for a 1-over, 37. The junior finished the day in a tie for 37th at 3-over (75). Senior Marion Veysseyre was close behind Pelaez with at 4-over (76). Veysseyre was unable to put in any birdies, but carded 14 pars to end the first day in a tie for 46th.

Carolina’s squad finished up with Anita Uwadia, who finished with a 7-over, 79. The junior managed to bounce back after her tough front nine (42) to finish the back nine at 1-over (37). She sank two birdies, and finished the opening round at 7-over (79) and in a tie for 74th.

The Gamecocks will be paired with North Carolina State and Florida for round two on Monday. Uwadia will lead things off for Carolina on hole one at 10:40 a.m. ET.
