Pickens Named to FWAA Freshman All-American Watch List
Defensive Lineman Considered Among Top Freshmen in the Country
University of South Carolina defensive lineman Zacch Pickens is one of 74 FBS players on the official Watch List for the 2019 FWAA Freshman All-American Team and the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award, it was announced today.
Pickens, a 6-3, 300-pounder from Anderson, S.C., is expected to make an immediate impact on the Gamecock defense this season. As a senior at T.L. Hanna High School in 2018, Pickens was rated as the top player in the Palmetto State, the No. 1-ranked defensive tackle in the country and No. 8 overall, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. He led the Yellow Jackets to the South Carolina 5A state championship game before enrolling at South Carolina in January.
Pickens and the Gamecocks will open the 2019 season on Saturday, August 31, when they travel to Charlotte to face the North Carolina Tar Heels. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. at Bank of America Stadium and the contest will be televised nationally on ESPN.
