Carolina Starts Strong at S.C. College Invite

COLUMBIA, S.C.— South Carolina swimming and diving put in a strong performance Friday on the first day of the S.C. College Invitational. Matched up against UNC Wilmington and Queens University, the Gamecocks won 13 of the 20 events to take a commanding leading through day one.
 
Gamecock Notables

  • Carolina started the meet by taking the men’s 200 freestyle relay with the team of sophomore Lewis Burras, senior Justin Rose, junior AJ Ross and sophomore Dylan Delaney securing the win with a 1:20.84.
  • Senior Albury Higgs and sophomore Hallie Kinsey took first and second in the 200 IM, respectively.
  • Sophomore Haley Arner picked up the first 500 freestyle win of her career, swimming a 4:57.32.
  • The Gamecocks swept three straight events. Seniors Ana Menendez-Nava and Lionel Khoo won the 100 breaststroke, freshman Emma Alexander and senior Kevin Liu won the 200 backstroke and senior Christina Lappin and Lewis Burras won the 100 freestyle.
  • The Gamecocks ended the meet strong, winning both 400 medley relay heats.
  • In diving, sophomore Anton Down-Jenkins, junior Grant Summers and sophomore Alex Claus swept the podium in the 3-meter board. For the women, freshman Mathilda Roxne and sophomore Yu Qian Goh took first and second respectively.

Day two of the S.C. College Invitational will begin Saturday at 10 a.m. following the senior recognition ceremony at 9:40.
