Gamecocks Shine on First Day of Last Chance Meet

Athens, Ga.—South Carolina swimming and diving turned in a strong performance at the first day of the Georgia Last Chance Meet on Saturday. Eighteen Gamecocks advanced to the A-finals, highlighted by sophomore Phil Costin touching first in the 200 free.
 
Costin brought home the lone win of the night for the Gamecocks, swimming a 1:34.28 to win the 200 free. The sophomore’s time tied his personal and the program’s season best in the event.
 
Senior Christina Lappin continued her impressive senior season, turning in a 52.45 in the 100 butterfly, which placed her second in the event. Senior Lionel Khoo also placed second in the 100 breaststroke, hitting the NCAA B-cut with a 53.23, the third fastest time by a Gamecock this season. Sophomore Mari Kraus also made the NCAA B-cut in the 200 backstroke, placing fourth with a time of 1:56.92.
 
The Gamecocks truly shined in the men’s 50 freestyle, sending five swimmers to the A-Finals with two turning in NCAA B-cut times. Sophomore Dyland Delaney celebrated his birthday with a 19.75 to take third, and fourth place went to junior AJ Ross with his 19.83. Freshmen Mark Shperkin and Guy Gropper and senior Justin Rose rounded out the event finishing fifth, sixth and eighth, respectively.

The Gamecocks will be back in the pool tomorrow for the final day of the Last Chance Meet.
