Gamecocks Open Season at No. 8 N.C. State

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina women’s tennis team opens its 2020 dual-match season on the road against N.C. State on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.

This will be the first meeting between No. 9-ranked Carolina and No. 8 N.C. State since the Gamecocks topped the Wolfpack, 5-2, in 2008. South Carolina leads the overall series, 12-2. Although the two programs have not faced off in a dual setting in over a decade, the student-athletes are familiar with each other individually competing at tournaments.

In the fall, Megan Davies, then-ranked No. 125, defeated three competitors on the Wolfpacks’ roster. She topped Liz Norman (5-7, 6-1, 6-3), No. 40 Alana Smith (1-6, 6-4, 7-6 [11]) and No. 84 Adriana Reami (7-6 [2], 6-3). In doubles, Silvia Chinellato and Emma Shelton paired up for a victory opposite of Jaeda Daniel and Reami, 8-6.

South Carolina brings in two ranked singles players in No. 27 Mia Horvit and No. 28 Davies. After her fall campaign, Horvit holds a 13-7 record, including 7-7 against ranked opponents. Davies put together a mark of 16-9 and also went 7-7 when facing ranked competitors.

Chinellato and Shelton represent the Gamecocks in the doubles rankings at No. 18. Together in the fall the duo totaled a 7-3 record, winning seven-straight matches.

The Wolfpack have three ranked singles players, including No. 18 Anna Rogers, No. 23 Reami and No. 31 Smith. They also have two teams in the doubles poll in No. 1 Smith and Rogers and No. 22 Daniel and Reami.

Live streaming and scoring are both available for Saturday’s match.
