Smith Breaks School Record, Gamecocks Finish 11th at Women's SECs

Sophomore swam 48.69 in the 100 free prelims to set new PR en route to 10th in B-final

ATHENS, Ga. — South Carolina finished 11th at the 2021 Women’s SEC Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday night, scoring 276 team points. The Gamecocks had five finalists in the final session, led by sophomore Janie Smith, who finished 10th in the 100 free.
 
Smith, a native of Charlotte, N.C., broke the school record in prelims this morning with a time of 48.69 to earn the 11th seed. She swam 48.73 in the B-final. All-American Christina Lappin held the previous 100 free record at 48.95 (2/23/19).
 
Junior Mari Kraus also swam in the B-final of the 200 back. She finished 15th with a time of 1:56.15.
 
Sophomore Taylor Steele finished 24th in the 200 breast with a finals split of 2:13.57.
 
Freshman Kaitlyn Porter (1:59.60) and sophomore Emily Horomanski (2:00.05) both set PRs in the prelims of the 200 fly to adance to the C-final of the event tonight. Porter finished 19th with a finals time of 2:00.07 and Horomanski 20th with a time of 2:00.31.
 
The Gamecocks concluded the 2021 edition of the conference meet with a 10th place finish in the 400 free relay. Smith (48.79), freshman Aubrey Chandler (50.39), sophomore Emma Alexander (50.15) and Kraus (49.97) swam a split of 3:19.30, the fourth-fastest time in program history.
 
NOTE: The men’s championship will also be hosted by Missouri next week (Feb. 23-26). This marks the first time in 35 years the SEC Championships are being held in separate venues. In 1986, the women’s swimming and diving championship was held in Knoxville, Tenn. and the men’s championship in Baton Rouge, La.
