Carolina starts weekend of four games in three day with a win

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. —- No. 17 South Carolina softball opened the Carolina Classic with a commanding 14-1 run-rule victory in five innings over Elon on Friday. Kassidy Krupit and Mackenzie Boesel combined for a 4-for-6 day with eight RBI to help lead the Gamecocks to their seventh run-rule win of the year.
 
South Carolina (10-2, 0-0 SEC) scored at least two runs in three of its four chances at the plate as it finished the game with 12 hits. Four different Gamecocks (Boesel, Kenzi Maguire, Krupit and Jordan Fabian) posted multi-hit performances while an additional four (Aaliyah White, Alyssa Kumiyama, Chooch Carroll and Kylee Gleason) added hits, as well.
 
Bailey Betenbaugh (3-0) earned the victory in the circle on her birthday in four innings of work with just four hits allowed and one run. She had six strikeouts. Skylar Trahan earned her first Carolina appearance in the circle as she came on in relief in the fifth. She finished the inning with two strikeouts.
 
Carolina opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with Krupit and White RBI to give the Garnet and Black a 2-0 lead through one. The Gamecocks posted six more runs in the second, highlighted with Krupit’s three-run home run to right field, to push the lead to 8-0 through two full innings of play.
 
Five more runs in the third thanks to Boesel, Krupit, Fabian, Zoe Laneaux, and Gleason RBI extended the Gamecocks’ advantage to 13-0 through three.
 
Elon (2-4) added its only run of the afternoon in the top of the fourth, but it wasn’t enough as Carolina opened its stretch of four games in three days with a victory.
 
NOTABLE

  • Kassidy Krupit posted six RBI in the win today. It’s the second time she’s finished a game with six RBI (Feb. 26 vs. Longwood). She’s recorded at least one RBI in 10 of Carolina’s first 12 games.
  • Continuing the note, Krupit has posted multi-RBI performances seven times this year. She has five multi-hit games.
  • Krupit has also also reached base in seven-straight games.
  • Carolina has taken advantage at the plate this year. Through 12 games, the team is hitting .377 with runners in scoring position.
  • South Carolina is now 343-223 under head coach Beverly Smith in her 11th season.
