Gamecocks Fall at Top-25 UNC in Dual Meet Finale

Sophomore Taylor Steele notched a win in the 100 breast (1:01.45)

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — South Carolina swimming and diving fell in the regular season finale at North Carolina on Sunday afternoon. The Gamecock women fell to the 24th-ranked Tar Heels 184-111, while the men fell 212-84 to the 20th-ranked Tar Heels.

GAMECOCK NOTABLES
• Sophomore Taylor Steele highlighted things on the women’s side as she was victorious in the 100 breaststroke, swimming a time of 1:01.45. She finished second in the 200 breast with a time of 2:15.12.
• Sophomore Janie Smith finished second in the 50 free with a time of 22.98. Junior Emma Walker was third just behind Smith with a time of 23.17.  
• Junior Mari Kraus finished second in the 200 back with a time of 1:59.46.
• Freshman Bella Pantano was second in the 100 back (55.82).
• On the men’s side, redshirt senior Rafael Davila finished second in the 1000 free with a time of 9:16.63. He was third in the 500 free (4:29.60).
• Sophomore Jordan Yip Zhu Ern finished second in the 200 fly (1:49.37). He finished third in the 200 breast with a time of 2:01.54.
• Junior Phil Costin finished second in the 100 free with a time of 45.13. Ross took third with a time of 45.16.
• Sophomore Jordan Yip Zhu Ern made his debut and a solid performance talking second in the 200 breaststroke (2:00.67). He finished a fraction of a second behind Georgia’s Jack Dalmolin (2:00.27).
• Sophomore Chase Allison posted a solid time in the 200 IM (1:50.35), finishing just behind UNC’s Jacob Rauch (1:50.18).

UP NEXT FOR THE GAMECOCKS
South Carolina will be off from competition to prepare and train for the SEC Championships in late February. This year’s conference meet has been split into three separate events due to COVID-19. The men’s and women’s diving portion will take place Feb. 17-20 at Mizzou Aquatic Center in Columbia, Mo. Women’s swimming will be held simultaneously at Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Ga. Men’s swimming will be held from Feb. 23-26 at Mizzou Aquatic Center.
