Gamecocks Take on Georgia in Athens
Athens, Ga. – South Carolina swimming & diving is in Athens, Ga., for its first away meet of the season versus the No. 8/8 Georgia Bulldogs. The meet will take place Sat., Oct. 23, at 11 a.m. at the Gabrielsen Natatorium.
“The SEC is recognized as one of the top athletic conferences in swimming and diving,” said head coach Jeff Poppell. “This weekend the caliber of competition goes to another level for our team.”
In the Gamecocks’ most recent meet versus Gardner-Webb, South Carolina swept every event of the 32-event meet. Divers Sophie Verzyl and Manny Vazquez Bas each recorded NCAA zone qualifying scores.
Senior Mari Kraus returns to the pool for the Gamecocks after taking wins in the 200 backstroke in both duals versus the Bulldogs last season. Fifth year AJ Ross aims take the win in the 50 free after tying for first in the last dual battle versus Georgia.
Last season, Georgia’s men placed second at SEC Championships while the women placed third. The Bulldogs were the only team in the SEC to finish in the top-10 at the NCAA Championships for both men and women.
South Carolina will be the second team to compete against the Bulldogs in their doubleheader weekend. Georgia will take on North Carolina Friday at 2 p.m.
