Gamecocks Claim 11 Event Wins in Indoor Regular Season Finale

Carolina closed the indoor regular season with the UofSC Indoor Open

COLUMBIA—The South Carolina track and field teams closed the regular season on Friday with 11 individual event victories inside of the Carolina Indoor Track and Field Complex.

Though it did not come as a victory, Kayla Racine’s performance in the women’s weight throw was one for the history books.

Racine became the third Gamecock woman to ever throw 20 meters or farther in the weight throw. Racine finished as the event’s runner-up, but was the top collegian in the event. Her mark of 20.08m/65-10.50 moved her to No. 3 in school history in the weight throw.

“(Kayla Racine) has a lot of confidence,” said head coach Curtis Frye. “She believes in her coach (throws coach Mike Sergent) and she believes in her training group. Our team and university has a better team energy. She loves South Carolina. She’s from South Carolina and came back to her home.

“She’s executing, and she’ll be better outdoors in the hammer, too. She’s doing special stuff.”

Of Carolina’s 11 event victories, seven of them came from the Gamecock women.

Frye said he was proud of Jayla Jamison, who won the women’s 60 meters with a time of 7.38. Frye said it was good to see her bounce back from an injury and run not only two 60-meter races, but also a 200-meter race in which she finished in sixth place with a time of 23.64.

Makenzie Dunmore led a group of five Gamecock women to top-six finishes in the 400 meters. Dunmore won the event with a time of 53.19. Angel Frank (second) and Jahnile Registre (sixth) both finished with personal bests, running times of 53.73 and 56.12, respectively. Alysia Johnson and Aaliyah Pyatt finished fourth and fifth for Carolina in the event.

Rachel Glenn cleared 1.80m/5-10.75 or higher for the third time this season. She won the women’s high jump invitational section with that mark.

Kira Jenkins also captured victory in the women’s 3,000 meters with a personal-best time of 10:27.10.

The women’s 4X400-meter relay team of Dunmore, Glenn, Pearl Nagbe and Pyatt won their relay race with a time of 3:34.64.

Brooke Donoghue (Mile) and the women’s Distance Medley Relay team (Smith, Zamrowski, Davison, Pisani) also earned event victories for Carolina.

On the men’s side, Hayden Cobbe dropped his 800-meter personal best to win the 800 meters’ invitational section. Cobbe won with a time of 1:50.23.

Rogerio Amaral won the men’s Mile invitational section with a time of 4:10.09. That win was his third of the season and his second in the Mile.

William Spencer Jr. won the men’s 400 meters with a time of 47.68. He beat out professional athletes to earn the victory.

Dillon McCarthy had the final individual event victory for the Gamecock men in the pole vault. He cleared 4.87m/15-11.75 for the victory.

The Gamecock track and field squads turn their attention to the SEC Indoor Championships next Friday and Saturday in College Station, Texas.

Frye said the next few days will be all about recovering until the team makes the trip to the Lone Star State.

“We’ve got to try to recover from this meet,” Frye said. “We rested some people today, but also got some good reps in for others at this meet.”
