23 Gamecocks Named CSCAA Scholar All-Americans

The Gamecocks had 14 women and nine men earn the recognition, including two first-team selections.

Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina swimming and diving saw 23 student-athletes honored as CSCAA Scholar All-Americans, the association announced. The Gamecocks had 14 women and nine men earn the recognition, including two first-team selections.

The award recognizes student-athletes for their work both academically and athletically throughout the 2021-22 season. First-team honors recognize those who achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and were invited to compete at their respective national championships. Second-team honors recognize those who eared a 3.50 GPA or higher and achieved a “B” time standard or participated at a diving zone qualification meet.

Graduate swimmer AJ Ross earned his fifth honor as a Scholar All-American, having been named to the first team in 2019 and the second team in 2018, 2020, 2021 and 2022. Senior Mari Kraus earned her second first-team honor this season and fourth honor of her career following an impressive senior campaign that led her to a spot at the NCAA Championships.

Graduate Tamas Novoszath earned his fourth honor on the second team, along with juniors Taylor Steele and Jordan Yip Zhu Ern, who have each earned the honor for a third time. Ten Gamecocks earned the recognition for the first time, including two freshman.

The Gamecocks nearly tripled last season’s Scholar All-American selection this season under first-year head coach Jeff Poppell, having had only eight in 2021. Prior to the 2021 season, South Carolina had five consecutive seasons with more than 20 honorees.

South Carolina’s men’s and women’s teams were also recognized as a CSCAA Scholar All-America Team during both the fall and spring semesters this season, marking the 14th straight semester of accomplishing this feat.

Founded in 1922, the CSCAA is the nation’s fist organization of college coaches. The mission of the CSCAA is to advance the sport of swimming and diving with coaches at the epicenter of leadership. Advocacy, and professional development.
