Hamner, Cruz Claim Flight Titles at Furman
GREENVILLE, S.C. – South Carolina women’s tennis won two of the eight singles flights at the Debbie Southern Furman Fall Classic with Sarah Hamner claiming Flight 1 and Ana Cruz taking Flight 7 on Sunday. Three other Gamecocks picked up another singles win on the final day of competition at the event.
Hamner’s title came via default by North Carolina’s Elizabeth Scotty, the 12th ranked player in the country. Cruz rolled in her Flight 7 final, topping Furman’s Sara Snyder 6-0, 6-3.
No. 42 Ayana Akli grabbed her first ranked win of the season with a dominating 6-0, 6-2 win over No. 73 Kylie Bilchev of Georgia Tech in Flight 2 consolation action. Sophomore Misa Malkin picked up her second win in as many days with a 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (2) win over Georgia Tech’s Kate Sharabura in the consolation final of Flight 6. Freshman Annie Jennings got back in the win column on Sunday, pushing back after a first-set loss to Mississippi State’s Dhorani Nirosahan to take the 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory.
In all for the tournament, South Carolina went 15-9 in singles with Akli and Malkin joining Hamner and Cruz with multiple wins on the weekend.
The Gamecocks are back in action next weekend at both the NC State College Ranked Spotlight (Sept. 22-25) and the Charlotte Fall Invite (Sept. 23-25).
