Divers Finalize Home Slate Against Davidson Saturday
Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina’s divers will conclude the team’s schedule of home events on Saturday, hosting a dive-only dual at the Carolina Natatorium. The event will begin at 10 a.m. with doors opening at 9 a.m.
The Gamecock divers are coming off of a successful dual against Georgia last week, having three individuals account for wins in all four diving events.
On the women’s side, sophomore Sophie Verzyl won the 1-meter competition and placed second in the 3-meter competition, individually contributing 13 points to the team. Her performance earned her the honor of SEC Diver of the Week, her first honor of the season and third of her career.
Graduate Brooke Schultz also earned an event win at the competition, winning the 3-meter event and placing second in the 1-meter. Schultz has achieved five springboard sweeps on the season and has been named SEC Diver of the Week four times.
Senior Manny Vazquez Bas leads the men’s team. The San Juan, Puerto Rico native is the reigning men’s SEC Diver of the Week after having swept the springboards at the dual versus Georgia. He scored a new personal best on the 3-meter, tallying up 405.75 points for the event win. He has twice been named SEC Diver of the Week this season for his efforts.
The men’s team is rounded out by freshman Charley Bayer who finished just behind Vazquez Bas in his most recent 1-meter event. Bayer has already earned NCAA Zone qualifying scores on all three diving events and was named SEC Diver of the Week once this season.
Admission to the meet is free and open to the public. Spectators must remain in the upstairs gallery and will not be permitted on the pool deck at any time.
