Women’s Tennis Earns Two Sweeps in Friday Doubleheader

Columbia, S.C.  – South Carolina women’s tennis earned 4-0 sweeps over both Coastal Carolina and Yale in their Friday afternoon doubleheader. The Gamecocks started their day with a win over the Chanticleers and followed it up with a win over the Bulldogs.

Against Coastal Carolina the Gamecocks grabbed the doubles point with a pair of dominant wins on Courts 1 and 2.

In singles, No. 13 Ayana Akli defeated Victorie De Samucewics 6-0, 6-1 from the top spot in the lineup to get the first singles point. She was followed with a point on Court 6 from freshman McKenna Schaefbauer who earned her first career dual win 6-3, 6-2 over Coastal’s Lilie Steryous.

The match was clinched by senior Ana Cruz who took down her opponent 6-2, 6-0 for her first dual win of the season.

Against Yale, South Carolina took the doubles point with wins on Courts 2 and 3. The first doubles win of the day came from Court 3 where Shaefbauer and Sophomore Sarah Hamner paired up together for the first time in dual play, earning their first dual win. The duo is now 2-1 overall.

Freshman Alice Otis was the first Gamecock to pick up a singles win against the Bulldogs. Otis was unstoppable, taking down her opponent 6-1, 6-1. Akli again earned a straight set win, this time over Yale’s Chelsea Kung. Akli is now a perfect 5-0 in dual action from the top spot in the lineup.

The match was clinched by Schaefbauer who earned her first career match clinch. The freshman is now 2-1 in dual play after her 6-4, 6-4 win from the No. 5 spot in the lineup.

The women’s tennis team will be back in action on Sun., Feb. 19 against Wake Forest. The match will begin at 11 a.m. and will be played outdoors at the Carolina Tennis Center, weather permitting.
