Vazquez Bas Punches Ticket to NCAAs

Knoxville, Tenn. – South Carolina diving senior Manny Vazquez Bas has officially punched his ticket to the 2023 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. The senior placed third overall in the platform diving event at the NCAA Zone B Championships to earn his spot in Minneapolis.

Vazquez Bas placed third from a field of 23 in the prelims with a 405.00 to advance to the finals. From there he retained his spot at No. 3, finishing with a final 12-dive score of 793.05.

The San Juan, Puerto Rico, native placed in the top-12 of both the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions earlier at the Zone Diving Championships, meaning that he will also be permitted to compete in both of those events at NCAAs despite not earning the automatic qualifying placement.

Vazquez Bas becomes the first on South Carolina’s men’s team to secure a spot at this year’s NCAA Championships. The swimmers will await their invitations that will be announced tomorrow.

Also at the Zone B Championships, Sophie Verzyl and Brooke Schultz earned additional event berths. Both Gamecocks earned qualifying placements in the 3-meter event, picking up additional qualifying spots in addition to their 1-meter automatic qualifications from yesterday.

The Gamecock divers conclude action at the Zone B Championships with three divers advancing to the NCAAs.

South Carolina swimming & diving will compete next at each team’s respective NCAA meet. The women will begin their individual quests at the Championships March 15-18 in Knoxville, Tenn. The men will compete the following week, March 22-25 in Minneapolis, Minn.
