Softball Makes Quick Work with Run-Rule Victory

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina softball team (24-7) made quick work of the visiting Furman Paladins (7-18) Wednesday afternoon (Mar. 22), as the Gamecocks earned a 10-0 run-rule victory in five innings. Carolina needed just 1:19 to earn the victory in its quickest game of the season. The two teams were originally scheduled to play a double header, but they agreed to cancel the second game after a two-hour rain delay before the start of the game.

Riley Blampied led the Gamecocks at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Zoe Laneaux also finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Seven of South Carolina’s starters collected a hit on the day.

Carolina didn’t waste any time as the first five batters in the bottom of the first reached base and eventually scored. After Brooke Blankenship and Jen Cummings walked, Laneaux loaded the bases with a bunt single. Blampied singled to right-center, scoring two runs. Laneaux scored when the Paladins tried to put her out at the plate on Aniyah Black’s bunt. Blampied scored on a groundout by Marissa Gonzalez and Black came home on a bunt single by Giulia Desiderio.

They would add to the lead in the second with two more runs. Aaliyah White singled and Cummings walked. Laneaux followed with a single to right, scoring White. Blampied delivered a triple down the right field line, her second of the season, scoring Laneaux.

In the third, the Gamecocks put the run rule into effect. Gonzalez led off with a single and Desiderio was hit by a pitch. Jordan Fabian doubled to left, scoring Gonzalez, and Desiderio scored on a groundout by Blankenship. The final run scored when Cummings singled to right, bringing home Fabian.

Leah Powell earned her first win of the season, allowing one hit and striking out three in four innings of work. Karsen Ochs came on for the final inning, allowing one hit and striking out one. The two combined to not allow a walk in the game.

South Carolina enter its SEC bye weekend and returns to action at Clemson on March 28 for the first game of their SC Education Lottery Palmetto Series. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
