Carolina Secures 10 Wins in Final Day of Weems Baskin

COLUMBIA, S.C. (March 25, 2023) – Gamecock Track & Field saw significant success in the final day of the 2023 Weems Baskin Relays, winning a total of 10 events throughout the day.

“Overall, I thought this was a good weekend for us,” stated Head Coach Curtis Frye. “We had to battle not only good competition, but we had to take on challenging weather. We expect to always defend our home track and I feel like we did a good job of that. This was a great follow up to our performance in the Bahamas. I was proud of our relays today and setting Top 10 marks in the region. We had a lot of individual success this weekend as well, setting a lot of regional rankings. We are looking forward to improving every meet and that is what we will do down at the Florida Relays next weekend.”

Four of the Gamecocks’ 10 wins came via the men’s team, winning three individual events and one relay event. Evan Miller shined yet again in the 400 meter, clocking a personal best time of 45.60, which is the fastest time in the East Region and in the NCAA as well as the third best mark in Gamecock outdoor history. Filip Demsar also set the top mark in both the region and in the country after he dominated the 110-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 13.67 (1.1) for the win.

The final individual win came from the field event as veteran shot putter Dylan Targgart launched a new personal best, vaulting himself up the national leaderboard and the Gamecock record book. The Michigan native threw 19.42m (63-8.75) to secure second best throw in the East, third best in the NCAA and fourth best in program history.

The relays were a bright spot, as usual, for the Gamecocks. The 4x100m relay squad of Anthony Greenhow, Miller, Gatlin Lawson and DJ Black took the podium with a time of 39.99 for the third fastest time in the East and eighth best time in the NCAA. The 4x400m relay squad of Jackson Junkins, Demsar, Elisha Brooks and Miller finished runner-up in their respective event with a time of 3:10.77 to set a new season best and rank seventh in the East.

On the women’s side, the Gamecocks captured six overall wins, including two relay victories. Jayla Jamison earned a win in the women’s 100 meter when she ran 11.44 (1.2) for the 10th fastest time in the East Region this season. In the women’s 200m, it was Jahnile Registre who stole the show when she clocked a new personal best with a mark of 23.76 (1.5) to rank 17th overall in the East.

The Gamecocks went one and two in the 800m, with Kieley Gayle running 2:12.52 for the win and the 24th best time in the East. Teammate, Svenja Sommer, ran a personal best 2:13.93 to finish runner up and 36th in the East Region. The final individual win came in the open 1500m when Brooke Donoghue stopped the clock with a personal best time of 4:41.72, knocking off 17 seconds from her previous best.

Carolina dominated in the relays, beginning with the 4x100m relay. Aalliyah Francis, Jamison, Alysia Johnson, and Anastasia Sumpter posted a time of 44.17 for the win and more importantly the second fastest time in the East and the second best mark in the NCAA. The women’s 4x400m relay team accomplished a similar feat, winning with a time of 3:37.57. The relay squad of Jahnile Registre, Jamison, Sylvia Chelangat, and Gayle ran the seventh best mark in the East and eighth best time in the NCAA.

The Gamecocks will head to Florida for the first of two meets that will take place in Gainesville this outdoor season, beginning with the Florida Relays on Friday, March 31 and Saturday, April 1.
