South Carolina seeking to make match play for the fourth time in six seasons of the new format

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – South Carolina begins postseason play on Wednesday morning at the 2023 SEC Championship. For the 22nd year, the conference tournament will be played at Sea Island Golf Club’s Seaside Course.

The SEC has conducted its annual championship on St. Simons Island since 2001 (Seaside Course 2001-2007, 2010-2021; Frederica Golf Club 2008-2009). Since 1927, Sea Island Golf Club has enjoyed a legacy as one of America’s premier clubs.

“It’s always nice to be back at Sea Island for the SEC Championship,” said head coach Bill McDonald. “Seaside Golf Course is in great shape and the weather looks good for the tournament. Our guys had a really productive past week with qualifying and practice, and they seem motivated and determined to play their best golf.”

This year will mark the sixth consecutive time in which the tournament will feature 54-hole stroke play with an individual SEC Champion crowned after the first three days (April 19-21) of competition. There will be a 54-hole cut to the top eight after Friday’s third round with the match play quarterfinals taking place Saturday. The semifinal matches will immediately follow on SEC Network+ with live coverage by the SEC Network of the championship on Sunday.

Since switching to the new format, Carolina has made match play in three of five seasons, falling in the quarterfinals each time.

Top-ranked Vanderbilt has won the back-to-back titles the past two seasons. Eight total teams in the 14-team field this week are ranked in the top-25 of the latest Golfstat Team Rankings with a trio slotted inside the top-10.

It’s a familiar five for the Gamecocks this week led by sophomore Nathan Franks. Fifth-year senior Evans Lewis, junior Rafe Reynolds, transfer Lansdon Robbins and freshman Zach Adams. Sophomore Gene Zeigler will serve has the team’s substitute and can be subbed in at any point prior to the start of a round or a match.

Carolina is paired with Kentucky for the opening round on Wednesday morning. Adams will be first off for the Gamecocks at 9:40 a.m. (ET) on hole one. Live scoring is available via Golfstat.
