Evans Lewis and Nathan Franks paced Carolina with 1-over 71s today

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – South Carolina shot 289 (+9) in the opening round of the stroke play portion of the SEC Championship on Wednesday. The Gamecocks sit 13th on the leaderboard.

Sophomore Nathan Franks and fifth-year senior Evans Lewis led the team with 1-over rounds of 71. Franks had a clean card with a pair of birdies and just one bogey. He was hurt only by a double at the par-4 14th hole that runs along the mouth of the Brunswick River. Lewis led the team with four birdies. He was 2-under through 15 but made bogeys on his final three holes.

Freshman Zach Adams shot 73 (+3) and junior Rafe Reynolds was the final counting score with a 74 (+4). Adams had a nice start to his first career SEC Championship with birdies at the opening two holes. Transfer Lansdon Robbins shot 77 (+7).

No. 15 Texas A&M shot 11-under (269) and has the team lead by a shot over No. 17 Alabama. Tennessee’s Caleb Surratt and the Crimson Tide’s Thomas Ponder are tied atop the leaderboard with opening round 6-under 64s. Ponder made a hole-in-one at the par-3 17th.

The Gamecocks will again be paired with Kentucky for the second round on Thursday morning. Robbins will lead things off at hole 10 at 9:10 a.m. (ET). Live scoring will be available again via Golfstat.
