Carolina Sets Program Record in Final Day of Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (April 29, 2023) – The 127th Penn Relays concluded on Saturday afternoon, but not before another program record fell for the Gamecocks.

South Carolina’s 4×800-meter women’s relay squad of Kieley Gayle, Elena Kelety, Alex Costantino and Silan Ayyildiz posted a time of 8:40.20 in the Championship of America division, finishing eighth overall. The quartet ran a new program record, beating a 19-year-old school record by just over five seconds.

The Gamecock women competed in two more Championship of America events, including the 4x400m relay final. The team of Aalliyah Francis, Sylvia Chelangat, Angel Frank and Jahnile Registre ran 3:33.02 to finish fourth overall in the event. KD Young was the other competitor for the Gamecock women today, finishing ninth in the shot put after throwing 15.42m (50-7.25).

The Gamecock men took part in five events, including three Championship of America events, all in the field. Kobe Franklin placed seventh in the Championship high jump with a height of 2.02m (6-7.5), while Dillon McCarthy also finished seventh in the pole vault after clearing 4.82m (15-9.75). Dylan Targgart was the final competitor in the Championship of America, throwing 18.96m (62-2.5) in the shot put to place ninth.

The final two events for the men were both in the College Division. Filip Demsar finished eighth overall in the 110-meter hurdle finals after running 14.17 (-0.5). Meanwhile, the 4x800m relay team of Will Wright, Aidan Hatton, Jackson Dawson and Jack Mensch ran 7:33.88 to place ninth overall with the sixth fastest 4x800m time in Gamecock outdoor history.

The Gamecocks now turn their attention to preparing for the 2023 SEC Outdoor Championship that will be held Thursday, May 11 – Sunday, May 13. This year’s SEC Outdoor title will be hosted by LSU in Baton Rouge, La.
