No. 15 Gamecocks Round Out New England Trip with Clean Sheet Over UMass Lowell

LOWELL, MA – The No. 15 ranked South Carolina women’s soccer team (3-0-1) defeated UMass Lowell (0-2-2) on Sunday 2-0 to take home a clean sheet and two victories during the trip to New England. The Gamecocks remain undefeated through their first four games and have tallied 11 goals with three shutouts across them.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • South Carolina started heavy with the pressure against the River Hawks, with sophomore Shae O’Rouke putting up a shot just two minutes into the game
  • The Gamecocks would make several more attempts, and senior forward Cat Barry gave her team the first close call of the day after being met with a huge save from UMass keeper Taylor Burgess in the 10th minute
  • In the 37th minute after a forced playback from a River Hawks defender to Burgess, pressure from rookie Reagan Shucbach caused Burgess to send it off – but in the attempt, the ball ricocheted off Schubach’s torso into the back of the net to put the Gamecocks up 1-0 in the first half. The goal was Schubach’s third of the season in three games and her first career game-winner
  • Coming into the second half up a goal, South Carolina continued its attack with multiple shots coming from O’Rourke, Schubach, and Massachusetts native Barry
  • In the 67th minute, a throw-in from sophomore Dru Drake caused a scurry in front of the net, and junior Lily Render took a shot that hit the crossbar and eventually grazed the back of Burgess’ fingertips to cross the goal line, and was called good to put South Carolina up 2-0. The goal was the second of Render’s career
  • Fifth-year keeper Heather Hinz recorded her 24th career shutout, holding her strong at No. 4 in the South Carolina record books for the stat
