Mills Makes Way Into Consolation Semifinals
Chapel Hill, N.C. – South Carolina women’s tennis completed its third day of action at the Carolina Regional Championships on Saturday with graduate Elise Mills advancing to the semifinals of the A2 consolation draw.
Mills represented the Gamecocks in the A2 singles consolation bracket where she claimed an efficient 6-4, 6-1 win over UNCW’s Eda Arli to advance. Her quarterfinal opponent pulled out of the tournament due to injury, advancing Mills to the consolation semifinals.
Junior Misa Malkin was the top performing main draw Gamecock of the day. In the A1 draw round of 16, the Tucson, Ariz., native claimed a win over in-state rival Clemson, defeating Alina Tsyurpalevych in a three-set comeback. The Tiger claimed the first set with a late break 7-5, but Malkin bounced back to claim the next two sets 6-2, 6-2 for the win.
In the quarterfinals, Malkin faced the nation’s No. 5 player Reese Brantmeier of North Carolina. The Tar Heel proved she is worthy of her top-5 ranking, besting Malkin 6-2, 6-0.
Also in the A1 draw round of 16, junior Olympe Lancelot fell to Charlotte’s Sara Suchankova 6-3, 6-3, ending her run in the tournament.
In the A2 draw round of 16, No. 106 Shahar Biran battled against No. 123 Cristina Mayorova of Clemson. The Gamecock took the first set 6-2, but Mayorova fought back to claim the win with a 6-1 second set and 6-4 final set.
Mills will play in the consolation semifinals on Sunday against Anastasia Astakhova of Charleston Southern on Sunday. Matchups and results from the Regional Championships will be available on the tournament webpage.
