Baseball Shuts Out Longwood in 8-Inning Series Opener
COLUMBIA – The University of South Carolina baseball team opened a three-game series with Longwood with a 10-0, eight-inning win Friday night (March 8) at Founders Park.
Power was on display for the Gamecocks as Carolina hit four home runs, two off the bat of Dylan Brewer. Cole Messina had his fifth home run while Ethan Petry belted his sixth round-tripper of the year.
Carolina scored one in the first, three in the second and one in the fourth and sixth frames. The Gamecocks ended the game with a wild pitch that scored pinch runner Austin Brinling after Brewer’s second home run and Petry’s blast earlier in the inning.
Eli Jones picked up his second win of the year, striking out five in six scoreless frames. He allowed nine hits and walked two in his 108-pitch outing. Parker Marlatt threw the final two frames with no hits and two punchouts.
Brewer was 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Kennedy Jones had two hits while Messina drove in a pair.
POSTGAME NOTES
- Brewer upped his average to .478 with 17 runs scored and 14 RBI.
- Jones pitched a season high six innings in the win.
- Carolina now has six run-rule wins this season.
- Brewer leads the team with eight multi-hit games.
- This is the second shutout of the year, lowering the team ERA to 2.22.
