Baseball's Pitzer Named SEC Freshman of the Week
BIRMINGHAM – Coming off a win in his first career start, rookie righthanded pitcher Tyler Pitzer has been named the Southeastern Conference’s Freshman of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon (March 25).
Pitzer earned two wins on the mound this week, improving to 4-0 on the season with a 0.48 ERA. He pitched two innings of relief on Tuesday against USC Upstate, striking out two and not allowing a hit in the 14-8 win. Then on Saturday in his first start as a collegian, Pitzer struck out nine and allowed just three hits and two unearned runs with only one walk in a 10-2 win over No. 3 Vanderbilt, who was hitting .315 as a team heading into the game. Pitzer retired the first 10 batters of the game and had 1-2-3 innings in the first, second, third and sixth frames.
Pitzer is Carolina’s first Freshman of the Week honoree this season and is the first one since Ethan Petry earned the honor on April 3, 2023.
Carolina will host Presbyterian on Tuesday night (March 26) at 6:30 p.m. The game will be streamed on SEC Network Plus.
