Spencer and Fry Wrap Season at NCAAs
Indianapolis, Ind. – South Carolina swimming & diving concluded its season on Saturday with the end of the men’s NCAA Championships. The Gamecocks were represented at the event by freshmen Max Spencer and Connor Fry.
Spencer competed in the platform event where he finished in 27th place with a 305.75. His score was highlighted by a back two-and-a-half somersault pike from the 10-meter platform that garnered him 59.45 points. He was the sixth-highest placing freshman in the event.
In the 1650 free, Fry swam a new career-best time of 14:53.33 that shaved 1.19 seconds off of his entry time and landed him in 27th place.
The swimming & diving season concludes with the women’s team ranked No. 23 in the CSCAA Dual Meet Rankings with a pair of All-American honorable mentions, and seven new program records.
The men’s team completed the season with one new program record and more than 30 new entries in the program’s all-time top-10.
This also marks the conclusion of the third season under head coach Jeff Poppell. Across his three seasons at the helm, Poppell has now brought a total of nine SEC medals to South Carolina and had 21 NCAA individual event qualifiers.
