Women’s Relays Shine on Closing Day of Florida Relays

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 30, 2024) – The 2024 Pepsi Florida Relays concluded on Saturday afternoon, and it was the women’s relay squads of South Carolina that stole the show.

The women competed in five events on Saturday, including a pair of relays in which the Gamecocks came out victorious. The day started for the women in the 4x100m relay as Jayla Jamison, Cynteria James, Zaya Akins and JaMeesia Ford improved on their NCAA leading time after running 43.34 for the win and the seventh fastest time in Gamecock history. The event was capped off with a win in the 4x400m relay as the squad of Aalliyah Francis, Jamison, Sylvia Chelangat and Ford clocked an NCAA-leading time of 3:28.57. The Gamecocks were fifth heading into the final handoff of the event before Ford ran a 49.38 final split to help turn in the 10th fastest outdoor 4x400m in Gamecock history.

Judy Kosgei also turned on the jets in her lone event of the day, setting a new program record in the women’s 800m after running 2:01.66 to finish third overall. Kosgei now holds both indoor and outdoor 800m program records and currently ranks third in the NCAA in the outdoor 800m.

The men’s squad was highlighted by a pair of veteran throwers in CJ Licata and Dylan Targgart. The duo competed in the men’s shot put and finished first and second overall, both setting new personal bests. Licata won the event after launching 20.00m (65-7.5) for the second-best throw in the NCAA this season and the third longest outdoor shot put in Gamecock history. Targgart followed closely behind with a throw of 19.93m (65-4.75), ranking third in the NCAA this season and fourth in Gamecock history.

Joshua Kosgei also set a new program Top-10 mark in the men’s outdoor 800m when he ran a personal best time of 1:49.14 to rank ninth all time on the school leaderboard.

South Carolina is back home next weekend on April 6 as the Gamecocks host the Gamecock Invitational at the Sheila & Morris Cregger Track.
