CHARLESTON  – The University of South Carolina baseball team scored three early runs, had a home run from Will Tippett in the seventh and put up a zero in the ninth in the Gamecocks’ 4-3 win over The Citadel Tuesday night (April 16) at Joe Riley Park.

Ethan Petry plated Carolina’s first run as his triple in the gap in right scored Parker Noland. Petry then scored on Dalton Reeves’ single to center. The Gamecocks made it 3-0 in the third as Kennedy Jones’ sacrifice fly scored Petry. The Citadel answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third.

Tippett belted his third home run of the season, a solo shot in the top of the seventh to the trees in left field. The Citadel scored a run in the seventh. In the ninth, Sawyer Reeves led off with a double off Garrett Gainey, but a pair of groundouts and a strikeout ended the game, giving Gainey his sixth save of the season.

Parker Marlatt earned the win in relief, striking out three in 1.1 scoreless innings. Gainey pitched the final two frames, allowing a hit with a pair of strikeouts.

Tippett was 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Gamecocks’ offense.
