Gamecocks Fall to No. 21 Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Three unearned runs in the sixth inning cost the South Carolina softball team (31-18, 7-13) Saturday afternoon (April 27), as the Gamecocks fell to No. 21 Kentucky (30-17, 8-12) 3-1.

Bre Warren and Brooke Blankenship each finished the day 2-for-3 to lead Carolina. Alana Vawter (14-10) took the hard-luck loss, allowing three unearned runs in 1 2-3 innings of relief. Jori Heard started in the circle, scattering three hits in four innings of work. Sage Mardjetko came on for the final out of the sixth.

The Gamecocks jumped out to the early lead in the in the second. Aniyah Black singled with one out and Kianna Jones followed with a walk. Bre Warren delivered a single up the middle, scoring pinch runner Kyye Ricks from second base.

Kentucky scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the sixth with two outs after an error could have ended the inning.

The rubber match of the series will be tomorrow at 1 p.m.
