Football Opens 2024 Season with Win over Old Dominion

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina recovered two fumbles inside the 10 leading to its only two touchdowns and the Gamecocks beat Old Dominion 23-19 on Saturday night.
South Carolina freshman quarterback LaNorris Sellers ran for a 3-yard touchdown with 6:11 to go to finally push the Gamecocks (1-0) past the Monarchs (0-1). Rocket Sanders opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown with 13:22 left after recovering the first fumble. LaNorris Sellers’ 3-yard touchdown with 6:11 left in the contest gave the Gamecocks the lead at 23-19.
Alex Herrera hit on 3-of-4 field goals in his first game as the starter. Kyle Kennard had an impressive debut for the Gamecocks with 2.5 sacks, 3.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble. Freshman Dylan Stewart had two forced fumbles, including one that led to the game-winning score, to go along with 1.5 sacks. Debo Williams led Carolina with seven tackles.
Jalon Kilgore intercepted Grant Wilson’s pass with 1:29 left to seal the victory in the opener.
