Gamecocks Sweep Blue Devils

DURHAM, N.C. – South Carolina swimming and diving swept Duke Friday afternoon at Taishoff Aquatics Center, including a top-20 battle between the women’s teams. The Gamecock men picked up their first win of the season with a 155-145 victory. The #17 Gamecock women topped #16 Duke 161-139 to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Women
On the women’s side, swimmers Greta Pelzek and Madison Kolessar swept their events, each adding a team-high 18 points to the Gamecock effort, and diver Sophie Verzyl posted a pool record on the 3-meter board.

  • The Gamecock distance group dominated, finishing 1-2-3 in the 500 and the 1000 free, led by grad student Madison Kolessar, who won both races.
  • Junior Amy Riordan touched first in the 200 free (1:45.71) for the second time in as many meets and led the 1-2-3 finish by the Gamecocks in the event. She had her hands on 13 points for South Carolina, adding a second-place finish in the 200 back and the leadoff leg of the winning 400 free relay squad.
  • Junior Sophie Verzyl was outstanding on 3-meter, scoring 390.53 to claim Duke’s pool record in the event after the Blue Devil’s top diver had just bested the previous mark a week earlier. Verzyl’s 13 points in the Gamecock total included taking second on 1-meter.
  • Freshman Nora Fluck made her Gamecock debut on Friday, finishing third in the 500 and 1000 free.
  • South Carolina capped the meet with a win in the 400 free relay as Riordan, Peyton Curry, Ellery Ottem and Dylan Scholes posted a 3:17.16 to become the sixth-fastest group in program history.

 

Men
The Gamecock men picked up nine first-place finishes, including the last six events to help clinch the win, and posted the top two times in three events.

  • The Gamecocks won both relays to open and close the meet strong, and the seven individual races were each won by a different swimmer.
  • Sophomore Connor Fry led a 1-2-3 finish in 500 free with his time of 4:25.66.
  • Sophomore Raymond Prosinski led the Gamecocks with 16 points of the team’s total. He touched first in the 1000 free (9:11.50) then finished second in the 500 (4:26.31), taking third in the 200 fly in between and capping the meet as the anchor leg of the winning 400 free relay team.
  • Sophomore Umut Yildirim completed the 1-2 finish in the 1000 free (9:18.60).
  • South Carolina swept the breaststroke races with Liam Kerns taking first in the 100 (54.27) and Linus Kahl winning the 200 (1:58.53) for the second time in as many meets.
  • The Gamecocks went 1-2 in the 200 back with senior Wylie Kruse leading the way at 1:46.30, and sophomore Ryan Hufford just behind at 1:46.50.
  • Grad transfer Eldor Usmonov got his first win as Gamecock with a 47.34 in the 100 fly.
  • Tommy Eaton, another grad transfer, powered home a win in the 200 IM (1:47.86), also his first win as a Gamecock.

 

Up Next for the Gamecocks
The Gamecocks are back in action tomorrow, traveling to Chapel Hill to face North Carolina. The Tar Heel women are ranked 21st in the nation. Diving begins at 9 a.m. with swimming to follow at 10 a.m.
