Three Gamecocks Earn SEC Players of the Week Recognition

Three University of South Carolina football players were recognized by the Southeastern Conference as Players of the Week following their performances in the Gamecocks’ 44-20 upset of No. 10 Texas A&M last Saturday, the conference office announced today.

Quarterback LaNorris Sellers was named the SEC’s Freshman of the Week. Sellers, a 6-3, 242-pound redshirt freshman from Florence, S.C., completed 13-of-27 passes for a career-high 244 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed 15 times for a career-high 106 yards and a a score. He led scoring drives on eight of 14 possessions, as the Gamecocks tallied 20 more points than the Aggies had allowed to an opponent all season. Sellers was also one of eight quarterbacks named to the Manning Award’s “Stars of the Week” and to the Davey O’Brien Award’s Great 8 for Week 10.

Right guard Torricelli Simpkins III was named the SEC’s Offensive Lineman of the Week. Simpkins III, a 6-5, 318-pound redshirt senior from Charlotte, N.C., graded out at 88 percent with six pancake blocks and three knockdowns. He helped the Gamecocks roll up 44 points and 530 yards of total offense while not surrendering a sack. The Aggies entered the contest allowing just 18 points and 338 yards per game. The Gamecocks had a pair of 100-yard rushers (Raheim Sanders – 144, LaNorris Sellers – 106), for the first time since 2021.

Placekicker Alex Herrera was named the SEC’s co-Special Teams Player of the Week. Herrera, a 6-0, 198-pound Super Senior from Columbia, converted all three of his field goal attempts and all five of his extra points for 14 points in the win over the Aggies. The field goals, which came from 25, 44 and 43 yards out, matched his single-game high.

Sellers, Simpkins III and Herrera will be in action again on Saturday, Nov. 9, when the Gamecocks (5-3, 3-3 SEC) travel to Nashville, Tenn. for a date with the No. 24/25 Vanderbilt Commodores (6-3, 3-2 SEC). Game time is set for 4:15 pm ET and the game will be televised on SEC Network with Dave Neal, Aaron Murray and Ashley ShahAmadi serving as the broadcast crew.
