Verzyl to Compete at the 2024 USA Diving Winter National Championships
COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina diver junior Sophie Verzyl begins competition at the 2024 USA Diving Winter National Championships tomorrow morning, competing in the women’s 3-meter synchro at 10:00 a.m. alongside Duke diver Margo O’Meara.
USA Diving hosts the 2024 Winter National Championship at Indiana University. The event will see action from the top athletes in the United States and contest national championship titles and spots on the 2024 World Championships team.
Additionally, Verzyl is entered to compete in the 1-meter on Dec. 13 and the 3-meter on Dec. 15. Prelims begin at 10:00 a.m. on both days while finals start at 5:00 p.m. on the 13th and 4:00 p.m. on the 15th.
This past summer Verzyl finished fifth overall at the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 3-meter, just three spots shy of making the 2024 Paris team. She tallied a final score of 587.40 across ten dives. In October she was named to the Tier 1 USA Diving National Team, a High Performance Squad consisting of 20 divers including Sarah Bacon and Kassidy Cook who were silver medalists in the 3-meter synchro at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The junior has had quite a successful collegiate season thus far, currently ranking first in the SEC in the 3-meter (398.03) and second in the 1-meter (337.60). She has been named SEC Diver of the Week four times, the most out of any swimming & diving athlete in the conference. Throughout five meets of the 2024-25 campaign the South Carolina native is undefeated in the 3-meter and has four wins in the 1-meter.
