Gamecocks Face Auburn for Saturday Dual Meet

AUBURN, Ala. – South Carolina swimming & diving heads back on the road for an SEC matchup this weekend as they are set to face Auburn University on Sat., Jan. 11 for a 10:00 a.m. dual meet at the James E. Martin Aquatic Center. Results will be available on the subscription-based app meet mobile.

The women’s programs are arranged for a ranked battle as both the Gamecocks and the Tigers were in the 2024 December edition of the CSCAA Top 25 Poll. South Carolina wrapped up the year ranked No.22, a couple spots away from No.19 Auburn. The Gamecock men will face their second ranked opponent of the year as the Auburn men rank No. 14 in the poll.

The Gamecocks opened 2025 at Virginia Tech last weekend for a dual meet where the women’s program advanced their season record to 4-2 after topping the Hokies 175-124. The Garnet & Black women picked up nine individual event wins, two of which included sweeps in the 200 IM and 200 butterfly. Greta Pelzek, Delaney Franklin and Sophie Verzyl led the team as they each earned two wins apiece to bring in a combined 54 points for the Gamecocks. Additionally, Pelzek set her second pool record of the season in the 200 butterfly after clocking a 1:55.51. Following her performances, Verzyl was named SEC Diver of the Week this past Tuesday marking her fifth of the season. The men’s program fell to the Hokies 204-96 but managed to collect three individual event wins from Connor Fry, Tommy Eaton and Max Spencer.

Auburn women remain undefeated against the Gamecocks with an all-time dual meet record of 9-0. The Tigers also lead the men’s series record 13-1. The last time South Carolina faced Auburn was in 2018. The men fell 131-164 while the women dropped 133.5-166.5.

So far this season the Auburn women are undefeated in dual meets with a 3-0 record going into Saturday while the men are 2-1. The Tigers are coming off of a dominant sweep against Georgia Tech where the women won 216-84 and men 203.5-96.5. The Tiger women have a strong sprint squad this year; the top three 50 freestylers rank in the top 16 in the conference led by Lexie Mulvihill who has the eighth fastest time in the SEC of 22.16. In the 100 free the top two Tigers rank 13th and 14th in the conference led by Lisa Klevanovich who clocked a 48.67 at the Georgia Tech Invitational in November. This should pose a close matchup for Dylan Scholes who currently has season bests of 22.51 in the 50 and 49.38 in the 100.

Similar to the women the Tiger men have a dominant sprint squad, as the top three fastest swimmers in the 50, 100 and 200 have season bests that are quicker than the top Gamecock in each event. Ryan Husband has the top 100 (42.58) and 200 (1:33.67) times while Kalle Makinen has the top 50 time of 19.32 for the Tigers. Both rank in the top 20 in the conference in their respective events. Nate Stoffle has the fourth and sixth fastest times in the SEC in the 100 and 200 back, clocking 45.04 and 1:39.36. Tommy Eaton is within reach of Danny Schmidt in the 200 fly as the two enter this meet with times of 1:42.51 and 1:42.83 respectively, presenting a close battle for Saturday morning.
