Verzyl Collects Sixth SEC Diver of the Week Honor
COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina diver Sophie Verzyl continues to represent the Gamecocks in the SEC weekly awards this season as she picked up her sixth honor of the 2024-25 campaign. The junior was named SEC Diver of the Week, announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.
The Columbia native has now been tabbed SEC Diver of the Week nine times throughout her collegiate career so far, more than any other South Carolina diver in program history.
Verzyl was a significant contributor to the Gamecock women making history this past Saturday, bringing in 18 points to help No. 22 South Carolina upset No. 19 Auburn 152.5-147.5 for the first time in program history. For the fifth consecutive collegiate meet this season the junior swept both the 1- and 3-meter events, winning each by over 30 points.
Verzyl started off strong on the 3-meter, earning 372.90 points after scoring 60.45 or higher on 5 of the 6 dives including a massive 73.95 on her final dive of a forward 2 ½ somersault 2 twist pike. She followed up with a dominant 1-meter performance, earning a final score of 331.50 after receiving 48.30 or better for each of the six dives including a high of 63.00 on her fourth dive – a reverse 2 ½ somersault tuck.
The Gamecocks conclude the regular season at home next week with a dual meet against Georgia Tech on January 25 at 10:00 a.m. Seniors will be recognized 30 minutes prior to the start of the event for their final meet at the Carolina Natatorium.
