Elbadra Claims Pair of School Records in Boston

BOSTON, Mass. (Feb. 8, 2025) – South Carolina Track & Field closed out a pair of meets on Saturday after competing in the East Coast Invitational in Virginia Beach, Va. and the Scarlet & White Invitational in Boston, Mass.

Salma Elbadra stole the show in Beantown with a pair of program records. The Wyoming transfer broke the school record in the women’s indoor mile, running 4:31.01 to topple Silan Ayyildiz’s previous mark of 4:32.14. Later in the day, Elbadra dropped another of Ayyildiz’s records, this time in the 3K when she ran 8:58.95 to best the previous program record of 9:10.54. Additionally, Elbadra finished as the top collegian in each of the two events.

The Gamecock Distance squad saw massive success in Boston, posting 11 additional Top 10 program marks to complement Elbadra’s new records. In keeping with the women’s distance squad, there were eight new Top 10 program advancements. Anya Arroyo posted the best overall finish with a runner-up finish of 16:24.70 in the 5K, the third fastest time in Gamecock history. There were four new advancements in the women’s 3K in the form of Teresa Cherotich (9:15.16 – 4th), Cate Conklin (9:29.56 – 5th), Emma Torbert (9:36.81 – 7th) and Siobhan Joyce (9:39.23 – 8th). Sylvia Chelangat clocked the fourth fastest women’s indoor 800m when she ran 2:06.19 to finish ninth overall. The final two Top 10 advancements for the women were from Abigail White and Mary Frances Iseman in the women’s mile with White running 4:48.36 (7th) and Iseman clocking 4:52.81 (10th).

The men’s distance group posted a trio of Top 10 marks in the men’s mile, led by Jaouad Khchina with the second fastest time in program history after running 3:57.73. Joshua Kosgei clocked the fourth fastest time of 3:59.91, joining the sub-4 minute mile club. Newcomer, Noah Contreras, was responsible for the 10th fastest indoor mile in program history, running a personal best time of 4:11.85.

Meanwhile in Virginia Beach, South Carolina laid claim to three event wins on the final day of the East Coast Invitational. Anthony Greenhow (21.10) narrowly defeated teammate Jasauna Dennis (21.14) in the 200m for the win and a new meet record. JaMeesia Ford made her 200m season debut with a win and a meet record, clocking 23.02 for the seventh fastest time in the NCAA this season. The final win in Virginia Beach came from Theo Mudzengerere in the men’s triple jump with a distance of 14.57m (47-9.5).

Dylan Targgart, 2024 NCAA Indoor Bronze Medalist, threw his season best in the shot put of 19.41m (63-8) to finish as the top collegian in the event. Additionally, his throw moved him into seventh place overall in the NCAA.

South Carolina will be back in action for one final indoor regular-season road meet before hosting its final indoor home meet of the 2025 season. The Gamecocks will next compete at the Tiger Paw Invite on Friday, Feb. 14 and Saturday, Feb. 15 at Clemson.
