REGULAR SEASON RECAP
The women’s program has had one of the strongest seasons thus far under head coach Jeff Poppell. The Gamecocks were ranked in the CSCAA top 25 poll for all five months after only receiving votes in the preseason, wrapping up the regular season with a No. 18 standing. Verzyl made her mark in the SEC weekly awards, picking up six total Diver of the Week honors which is the most earned by a Gamecock in one season. The women enter the SEC Championships with a strong 6-2 dual meet record, coming off a three-meet win streak which includes a historic upset victory over a then-No. 19 ranked Auburn when the Gamecocks were No. 22.
Combined, the men and women’s programs have set eight records. Greta Pelzek claimed three of them as she set three pool records in the 200 fly this season, twice at home at the Carolina Natatorium (1:53.93 & 1:54.75) and once at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center (1:55.51). Sophie Verzyl picked up two pool records in the 3-meter, one at UNCW (398.03) and one at Duke (390.53). Amy Riordan (pool – 200 back – 1:52.89), Kaden Smesko (pool & school – 200 back – 1:41.55) and Madison Kolessar (school – 1650 free – 16:12.57) set the other three records at the Gamecock Invitational back in November.
Both programs have consistently updated the top 10 all-time list this season, with the women’s team earning 38 new marks and the men tabbing 15.
