
Verzyl Earns Silver Medal on Day One of SECs
ATHENS, Ga. – The South Carolina swimming & diving team opened the SEC Championship with one podium finish from diver Sophie Verzyl.
The women’s 1-meter was the lone event for the first day of the SEC Championship. Verzyl, Aislinn Zuechner, Reagan Patterson and Alex Gregory represented the Gamecocks in day one action, with freshmen Patterson and Gregory making their SEC debuts.
Verzyl carried the team through day one, earning 28 points for South Carolina to have the women’s team in sixth place going into day two.
In prelims, Verzyl took second with a score of 306.05 after averaging 51.01 per round. Her highest score was on a 305C reverse 2 1/2 somersault tuck where she earned 61.50 points. She improved by over 20 points in her finals performance, taking home a silver medal after finishing with a final score of 328.40 which included a 63.00 on a 107C forward 3 1/2 somersault tuck. Additionally, the Columbia native had a degree of difficulty of 3.0 or higher on three dives which was the highest difficulty across the entire field.
“I was extremely proud of Sophie’s results tonight,” head diving coach Michael Wright commented. “She did a great job of staying locked in under pressure and living in the moment. Excited to keep things rolling with our men on 3-meter tomorrow.”
Day two of the SEC Championships consists of the men’s 3-meter and the 200 medley & 800 free relays. Live results and streaming links can be found here.
